چکیده

We investigated the influence of ice conditions on activity and movement patterns of polar bears in the CanadianWest Greenland Arctic. We used radiotelemetry data gathered over 11 years (1989–99) from 160 adult female polar bears to test for differences in movement and activity of bears inhabiting active ice and consolidated ice. Bears inhabiting active ice moved more than those inhabiting consolidated ice (12 versus 8 km/day), but their activity throughout the year did not differ (bears of both groups were active for 21% of the day). Differences in activity and movement of bears in the two study areas appeared to be related to differences in predominant ice conditions and presumed prey availability. Seals, particularly juveniles, are most plentiful in spring and summer, when polar bears moved more and were most active. During winter, when juvenile seals were less available in consolidated ice areas, bears in that habitat were less active and moved less than bears in active ice areas. Polar bears have evolved flexible patterns of seasonal activity, movements, and facultative den use as adaptations to different sea-ice environments.

Population substructure and space use of Foxe Basin polar bears

Climate change has been identified as a major driver of habitat change, particularly for sea ice-dependent species such as the polar bear (Ursus maritimus). Population structure and space use of polar bears have been challenging to quantify because of their circumpolar distribution and tendency to range over large areas. Knowledge of movement patterns, home range, and habitat is needed for cons...

Polar bears shift from thinning ice

A long-term study by the US Geological Survey (USGS) suggests that recent changes in the quality and availability of sea ice in northern Alaska are the most likely explanation for a decrease in female polar bears bringing up cubs on sea ice and an increase in basing themselves on land. Researchers from the USGS used satellite telemetry to evaluate changes in the distribution of female nesting s...

Females roam while males patrol: divergence in breeding season movements of pack-ice polar bears (Ursus maritimus).

Intraspecific differences in movement behaviour reflect different tactics used by individuals or sexes to favour strategies that maximize fitness. We report movement data collected from n = 23 adult male polar bears with novel ear-attached transmitters in two separate pack ice subpopulations over five breeding seasons. We compared movements with n = 26 concurrently tagged adult females, and ana...

New fears on sea-level rise

new cubs. Previous research has already shown that unstable ice can result in failures of on-ice denning attempts. Less ice than is suitable for denning apparently has led to an increased frequency of pregnant polar bears in this region choosing to den on land, " says Fischbach. Unlike other temperate and Arctic bear species that hibernate during winter months, polar bears remain active and sea...

Habitat‐mediated timing of migration in polar bears: an individual perspective

Migration phenology is largely determined by how animals respond to seasonal changes in environmental conditions. Our perception of the relationship between migratory behavior and environmental cues can vary depending on the spatial scale at which these interactions are measured. Understanding the behavioral mechanisms behind population-scale movements requires knowledge of how individuals resp...
